The weekend saw an estimated 15,000 visitors from around the region and surrounding states, with 3,500 people attending the Hairball concert on Friday night. The Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event included 21 barbeque competitors from across three states, with representatives from Omaha, Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa, Sioux City, Iowa and beyond. Big T’z Q Cru from Ames, Iowa was voted the Grand Champion and recipient of $1,500; Pigskin BBQ from Rockwell, Iowa was the Reserve Champion and recipient of $1,000; Porky Butts BBQ, from Valley, Nebraska took home the Best Metro award for Omaha; and True Smoke BBQ from Oronoco, Minnesota was voted the Norelius & Nelson People’s Choice. “Visitors and residents alike gave us many compliments for this first-time festival, and the excitement showed in attendance numbers,” said Evan Blakley, Executive Director of the Chamber & Development Council of Crawford County. "We could not have seen this level of success without the support and hard work of our sponsors, volunteers, vendors and attendees, and we are looking forward to bigger and better things at next year's festival." Gloom Balloon, a band from Des Moines, won the Tri City Battle of the Bands, taking home $3,500 in prize money. Gloom Balloon was recently named one of the top bands in Iowa by Paste Magazine and has also been reviewed by the national music website SPIN. "From the Hairball Concert on Friday all the way through the barbeque competition and battle of the bands on Saturday, we witnessed a community come alive and we ate a lot of barbeque," said Brad Bonner, the Mayor of Denison. "This was a fantastic event for the City of Denison and the State of Iowa, and we look forward to next year’s festival." Next year’s event is tentatively planned for next fall.
