Tri City BBQ Fest Created $844,000 of Economic Activity; 12/08/2014

After months of research, the numbers are in on the local impact of the first-ever Tri City BBQ Fest in September. The Chamber and Development Council of Crawford County (CDC) recently completed a round of surveys and an economic impact report to follow up on the tourism event's impact. Highlights of the report indicate $844,893 of total expenditures and $131,475 of net direct expenditures, the amount of new dollars injected into the community by non-local visitors. The estimates are calculated using the standard Tourism Impact Model used by tourism professionals across the state. The event itself ended with an additional profit of approximately $31,000 (after expenses of $104,554.08) to help it return next year. Like last year, the festival will remain on the 3rd weekend of September (the 18th & 19th in 2015). The CDC attempted to move the date this year to avoid local conflict, however in trying to find an open date within the Kansas City Barbeque Society's national calendar, it became clear the Tri City BBQ Fest could either retain its same weekend or risk being cancelled in 2015. KCBS rules state there cannot be two simultaneous competitions within 150 miles of one another and the calendar is already filling up for 2015. By all accounts a huge success, the inaugural year of the festival attracted an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 attendees each day and marketed Crawford County throughout the entire year. An estimated 5,000 visitors came from outside the local area to visit the festival, just exceeding the first year goals of the event. Visitors traveled from as far as Minnesota and Chicago. The research also reveals visitors had an enjoyable experience and would return. When respondents were asked if they would recommend the festival to a friend or colleague, more than 82% of respondents answered positively with an 8 or higher on a scale of 1 to 10. We can’t go anywhere without meeting someone excited about the Tri City BBQ Fest and asking when it will return, said Evan Blakley, Executive Director of the CDC, With a return date finally set, we can focus on building a great festival and improving the experience for our visitors. Improvements in the works include more food vendors, national level performers and a brand new layout to further enhance the guest experience. It's clear that within just one year the community has already seen the benefits that tourism can bring to the community, Blakley said. We are excited for the future of this great event.
