Denison, Iowa - How far is heaven? For fans of the Tri City BBQ Fest, it’s as close as a heap of tasty smoked meat, a frosty beverage and a rockin' live band — like Los Lonely Boys, the "Texican rock trio" who won a Grammy for the hit song "How Far is Heaven?" in 2005. Since then, the band has produced a string of 4 more critically acclaimed albums and racked up 2 more Grammy nominations. They will headline the third annual BBQ Fest by closing the show on Saturday, Sept. 17th. Festival favorite rockers Hairball will headline Friday’s "Kickoff Celebration", supported by their friends in the Badlands House Band, a tribute to classic rock, Southern rock and even a few country music icons.
Originating in San Angelo, Texas, Los Lonely Boys are a sibling trio whose music draws equally from rock, blues, Tex-Mex, conjunto, and tejano. Such a combination is shaped by the band's three brothers: guitarist Henry Garza, bassist JoJo Garza, and drummer Ringo Garza, Jr. Their debut album was recorded at Willie Nelson's Pedernales studio in Austin with Nelson sitting in and has sold more than 2 million copies to earn Double Platinum status. Its lead single "Heaven" reached the #1 spot on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart, and eventually won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The group has also recorded with Carlos Santana, being featured in a track on the album All That I Am.
A new "streetside" stage will fill Uptown Denison with free musical entertainment during the day on Saturday, with the main stage opening up at night for the national acts. New this year - the Fest will allow guests to bring lawn chairs to a certain area of the main stage. Tickets to the main stage will go on sale on July 1, at a price of $15 per day in advance or $25 for a 2-day music pass. Prices will increase on the day of the show. Tickets will be available to purchase at TriCityBBQ.com and at various locations in Denison including the CDC office.
Last year’s Tri City BBQ Fest saw impressive growth, with more than 20,000 festival-goers filling the streets of Uptown Denison over two days. The main feature is barbeque served up by top vendors from across the US, and also prepared by competitors for a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned competition. One of the three cities is awarded the Best Metro award based on their BBQ entries, with Omaha taking home the award both years so far. Other features include the Iowa Craft Beer Tent (with more than 24 taps) and activities for kids including rides and crowd favorites Wacky Water Walkerz.
The BBQ competition is awarding $10,750 in prize money this year and is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society as a "State Championship" — this is the big leagues of BBQ. Smoked meat lovers can sample exceptional BBQ during the entire two-day fest, prepared by vendors from across the Midwest. Visitors can also sample competitors’ baby back ribs and vote for their favorite during the People’s Choice segment on Saturday afternoon. Visit www.TriCityBBQ.com or call 712.263.6622 for more info.
